2009 Orioles player profile: Nick Markakis

                    RF #21 Nick Markakis

Info- 6-2 195

11/17/1983

Signed 6yr/66.1mil + 1yr/7mil option(09-14)

2008 stats- .306 AVG, 20 HR’s, 87 RBI’s, 10 SB, 7 CS, 157 G, 595 AB’s

Outlook- Markakis is entering his 4th season in the bigs, all with the

Orioles. Nick is the face of the franchise, and for that the

O’s rewarded the budding All-star right fielder with a 6yr/

66.1mil deal through 2014, with an option for 2015. Markakis

has improved every year with the bat, collecting a career .299

average, and on defense he was among the league leaders in

outfield assists with 17 from right field. Markakis is what makes

the O’s line-up jump, producing a big bat in the middle of the

line-up along with Huff, Jones, Scott, Mora, Wigginton and

eventually Matt Wieters. The O’s have a lot of young talent

coming up through the farm to produce with the players who

have already came up through the system, and when they do

come together and gel, you will have flashbacks to the old days

with the O’s in the playoffs. The only area Markakis can really

improve on is stealing bases, as he only had 10 in 2008. He

has the speed, but he needs to improve his technique, something

he has done this Spring.

2009 projection- .305 AVG, 27 HR’s, 115 RBI’s, 18 SB, 7 CS, 159 G, 615 AB’s
