Alex Cintron was called up and Brian Burres was sent_to_Norfolk. Burres will be going to Norfolk as a reliever, since he’s lost his spot in the rotation for the second straight season.

Brian Burres on the demotion:

“I’ve been struggling lately,” said Burres, who has been told he’ll pitch in relief for Norfolk. “It’s not like it’s out of the blue. I haven’t had too many good outings in the last month or two. I’ll just go work on stuff. I can’t really say anything. I didn’t do well enough to stay.”

At least he’s saying the right things. He hasn’t been good lately and he’s really been struggling.

Trembley on the matter at hand:

“I thought he pitched a whole lot better last season,” Trembley said. “Right now, it’s a matter of him going down in a less-pressure environment and getting some success, getting his confidence back. I told him to get some success under his belt and get back up here.”

With Alex Cintron coming up, it means the O’s have three “shortstops” on the 25 man with Cintron, Castro, and Fahey. This also marks the first time that the Orioles have had a four man bench since the Pre-Perlozzian days.

Also in the Burres/Cintron article, the deadline to sign 4th overall draft pick Brian Matusz is August 15th.  8 of the top 10 picks are unsigned presently, so Baltimore’s not the only team dealing with this.

Joe Jordan says:

“I’m still very confident,” Jordan said “We’re just going to have to get things going and make some progress in [the] next week or so and see what happens. I expect him to be signed. I think our offer will be more than fair, and he’s a smart kid. I think he ends up signing.”

Remember last season it took to the very last minutes of the deadline to get Matt Wieters signed. Andy MacPhail wants to build this team around pitching and defense, so he’s going to do everything he can do to sign this kid. I wish it would have happened already, but a lot can happen in two weeks.
